About
A synthesis tool for digital twins in clinical practice
Full title: Digital twins for precision medicine. Development of a platform for optimizing diagnostic and therapeutic protocols using 3D synthetic patients.
01 — Background
Main goal
SynthesizeCare is a fully novel approach to building a platform that creates digital twins of patients, that is, a digital anatomical map of each individual patient.
The twins are intended to be used directly in clinical practice. Indirectly, they become the basis for more specialized digital twins for targeted therapies, each of which draws on the digital anatomical map of the patient concerned.
SynthesizeCare therefore acts as the vehicle that opens the way for digital twins with immediate application in operational clinical systems.

02 — Methodology
Four phases
The work moves from evidence and data, through development and clinical evaluation, to the commercial exploitation of the results.

Evaluation & optimization
Commercial exploitation
Input, processes, output
The synthesis tool follows a simple contract: anatomical images go in, a validated anatomical digital twin comes out.
-
A — Input
Anatomical imaging
- Collection of anatomical images (CT and MRI) in transverse, sagittal and coronal planes
- Anonymized DICOM data from clinical routine
- Definition of organs with TotalSegmentator (for example heart, aorta, esophagus, trachea)
-
B — Processes
Learning the anatomy
- A dataset of paired clinical images and segmentations
- Models trained to predict whole-body organs, including 3D reconstruction of parts missing from the scan
- Evaluation and validation to create a 3D digital population
-
C — Output
The twin, in the clinic
- Graphical interface: load a DICOM study, submit, receive the anatomical digital twin
- Clinical evaluation with integration into the EVORAD PACS
- Digital population and pilot use cases
03 — Technology readiness
From proof of concept to a demonstrated system
SynthesizeCare starts at TRL 3 and is planned to reach TRL 6, carried jointly by BIOEMTECH and IKNOWHOW.

The work plan
The database (WP1) feeds the learning algorithms (WP2) and the clinical software (WP3), which iterate with each other and with the clinical evaluation (WP4). Exploitation, training and clinical impact (WP5) run alongside throughout, leading to digital twins in clinical practice and a Greek innovative pilot use case.
